The final seminar on the implementation of a local environmental initiative «URA Grodno!» was held at the Faculty of Biology and Ecology

The meeting took place on 7 July and completed the implementation of a project funded by the European Union.

The outcomes of the environmental initiative «URA Grodno!» were summed up at Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno: «Inclusive environmental management by inclusion of Grodno resident in the development and implementation of measures aimed at improving the quality of the environment and monitoring environmental risks in an educational multi-center of integrated support for the environmentally friendly lifestyle of local communities «URA Grodno!» (Sustainable development - activity of Grodno).

 

The initiative was implemented under the project on public involvement in environmental monitoring and improvement of environmental management at a local level, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus. The total project budget is $ 97,000. Its overall objective is to stimulate effective and inclusive environmental management by involving the public in the development and implementation of measures aimed at improving the quality of the environment.

On the part of the project managers, the seminar was attended by Igor Tchoulba, Programme Analyst (Environment and Energy) at UNDP Belarus, Piotr Sachek, Head of Exploration at UNDP Belarus, Olga Chabrovskaya, Project Manager at UNDP Belarus, and Anastasiya Krivitskaya, Events Coordinator at UNDP Belarus. Apart from Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, the partners of the project were State educational institution «Secondary school No. 12 in Grodno», State educational institution «Nursery-kindergarten No. 45 of Grodno» and Association «Education for Sustainable Development".

Alexander Karevsky, Dean of the Faculty of Biology and Ecology at Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, thanked the project leaders in his welcoming speech at the final seminar for the high degree of trust and support at all stages of the initiative. Also Olga Chabrovskaya, Project Manager at UNDP Belarus, noted high efficiency in the implementation of the project assignment at all stages and clear interaction with all co-executors.

As an output of the project, a modern learning laboratory for environmental monitoring of open air was created at the Faculty of Biology and Ecology of Yanka Kupala State University of Grodno, which will be in operation as a training multicenter for various target audiences. The laboratory is equipped with ventilation hoods, modern laboratory furniture and all the necessary modern equipment for carrying out rapid tests to assess the quality of the environment. These are, for example, a portable gas analyzer, a dust particle counter, a wastewater analyzer, spectrophotometers, an ion meter, a voltammetric analyzer of heavy metals, a portable soil laboratory, a microscope with photo and video recording.

Apart from the laboratory, the multicenter includes 7 educational mini-centers. The centers "Green Workshops", "Green Class", "Green Foyer", "Energy", "Water" will be in operation on the basis of the State educational institution «Secondary school No. 12 in Grodno», and the centers "Little Meteorologist" and "Ecology and health" will be in operation on the basis of the State educational institution «Nursery-kindergarten No. 45 of Grodno». All mini-centers are equipped with necessary mobile equipment for conducting research on environmental monitoring and formation of an environmentally friendly lifestyle.

During the implementation of the environmental initiative, about 8 thousand residents of Grodno took part in it. Also, under the initiative, many different conferences, environmental education campaigns, an inclusive eco-bike quest were held, and the theme-based information materials were developed.
